How to Build a Backyard Mini Golf Course (That Doesn't Look Terrible)

A DIY guide to building a mini golf course in your backyard, with budget tiers from $50 weekend project to $500 legit setup.

The $50 Weekend Project

You don't need a contractor. For under $50, you can build a playable 3–5 hole course with materials from a hardware store. Pick up a roll of outdoor carpet or artificial turf remnants, some 2x4 lumber for borders, PVC pipe for obstacles, and plastic cups sunk into the ground for holes.

Cut the turf into lane shapes, border them with the lumber, and you've got a functional course. It won't win design awards, but your kids (or your beer league) will love it. The key is keeping the lanes flat and the borders secure so the turf doesn't shift.

$50 Shopping List

  • Outdoor carpet or turf remnants (look for clearance)
  • 2x4 lumber or landscape timbers for borders
  • 4-inch PVC pipe (for tunnels)
  • Plastic cups or PVC caps for holes
  • Stakes or screws to secure borders

The $200 Serious Setup

Step it up with proper artificial putting green turf ($3–5 per square foot), landscaping timbers for clean borders, and real cup inserts designed for putting greens. At this level, you can build 6–9 holes with gentle slopes (use soil mounding under the turf), sand traps made from cheap play sand, and PVC pipe tunnels.

Add a few pavers for tee boxes and paint the borders. This is where your course starts looking intentional instead of improvised. The putting surface matters—cheap carpet rolls too slow and doesn't hold up; proper turf gives you a realistic roll and lasts for years.

The $500 Legit Course

At this budget, you're building something that could be a permanent backyard feature. Use professional-grade putting green turf, pressure-treated lumber or stone borders, and real golf cup inserts with flags. Add water features with a small recirculating pond pump, bridges made from deck boards, and multi-level holes using retaining wall blocks.

You can build a legitimate 9-hole course that looks like a scaled-down version of the real thing. Consider pouring small concrete pads for tee boxes. This level of investment pays off if you host parties, have kids who will use it for years, or just love the idea of stepping outside to practice your putting.

Layout and Design Tips

Work with your yard, not against it. Natural slopes become dogleg holes. Trees become obstacles to play around. A garden path becomes the walkway between holes. Vary the difficulty—start with two straight, easy holes, then add curves, banks, and obstacles.

Keep holes between 6 and 15 feet long. Make sure water drains away from the playing surface, not onto it. And leave enough space between holes so players aren't swinging into each other. A minimum of 4 feet between hole boundaries is a good rule of thumb.

Obstacle Ideas That Actually Work

PVC pipe tunnels: just bury a 4-inch pipe under a mound of turf. Ramp jumps using angled plywood covered in turf. Windmill arms from a lazy Susan and some wooden slats. A "water hazard" made from a shallow tray painted blue. Brick walls for bank shots.

The easiest obstacle of all: a curve. Just bend the borders and let the natural slope of the turf create the challenge. Avoid anything too gimmicky that breaks after one use—the best obstacles are simple and durable.
